Sunscreen Myths I Hear Every Day—and the Truth Behind Them

Think sunscreen is only needed during summer or while outdoors? A dermatologist breaks down the most common sunscreen myths and explains how to protect your skin correctly.

If I could ask my patients to use only one skincare product consistently, it would be sunscreen.

Regular sunscreen use helps prevent tanning, pigmentation, premature wrinkles and long-term sun damage. Over a lifetime, it also plays an important role in reducing the risk of certain types of skin cancer.

Yet many people still skip sunscreen because of a few common myths. Let us separate the facts from the misinformation.

Myth 1: “It’s Winter, There’s No Sun”

UVA rays—the rays associated with tanning, pigmentation and premature skin ageing—are present throughout the year. They can also pass through clouds and fog.

Winter sunlight in North India often feels pleasant, which means we may spend more time sitting outdoors without realising how much cumulative sun exposure we are receiving.

This is one reason pigmentation and melasma can worsen during or after winter.

The truth: Sunscreen is necessary throughout the year, not just during summer.

Myth 2: “I Stay Indoors, So I Don’t Need Sunscreen”

UVA rays can pass through window glass. Visible light from the sun can also contribute to pigmentation, particularly in Indian and deeper skin tones.

If you sit near a window, travel regularly by car or step outside even briefly during the day, sunscreen should remain part of your morning routine.

The truth: Staying indoors does not always mean you are completely protected from sun exposure.

Myth 3: “Dark Skin Doesn’t Need Sunscreen”

Darker skin contains more melanin, which provides some natural protection against sunburn. However, darker skin tones remain highly prone to tanning, uneven skin tone, dark spots and melasma.

Indian skin needs sunscreen not only to prevent sunburn, but also to maintain a more even complexion and reduce pigmentation.

The truth: Every skin tone needs sun protection.

Myth 4: “SPF 50 Protects Me All Day”

SPF indicates the level of protection a sunscreen provides against UVB rays. It does not mean the sunscreen will remain effective throughout the day.

Sweating, touching your face, wiping your skin and natural product breakdown gradually reduce protection.

The truth: Reapply sunscreen every two to three hours when outdoors, especially if you are sweating or exposed to direct sunlight.

Myth 5: “A Small Amount Is Enough”

Most people apply far less sunscreen than the recommended amount. Applying too little means you may not receive the level of protection mentioned on the product label.

For the face and neck, follow the two-finger rule: squeeze two lines of sunscreen along the length of your index and middle fingers.

Apply it evenly across your face, ears, neck and other exposed areas.

The truth: The correct amount matters just as much as the SPF rating.

How to Choose the Right Sunscreen

Look for a sunscreen with:

SPF 30 or higher

Broad-spectrum protection

PA+++ or higher UVA protection

Choose the texture according to your skin type and concern:

Oily or Acne-Prone Skin

Choose a lightweight gel or matte-finish, non-comedogenic sunscreen.

Dry Skin

Choose a hydrating, cream-based sunscreen that supports the skin barrier.

Melasma or Pigmentation

A tinted sunscreen containing iron oxides may provide additional protection against visible light.

Sensitive Skin and Children

Mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide may be better tolerated by sensitive skin.

How to Apply Sunscreen Correctly

Apply sunscreen as the final step of your morning skincare routine, approximately 15 minutes before stepping outdoors.

Remember to apply it to commonly missed areas, including:

Ears

Neck

Hairline

Around the eyes

Back of the hands

Reapply every two to three hours while outdoors and after excessive sweating or wiping your face.
